Orthodontic care is about much more than simply aligning your child’s teeth. At our practice, we strive to ensure that every part of your child’s mouth works together as one healthy, functional system. This approach leads to better oral health and helps reduce the chances of complications later in life. For some young patients, we recommend a type of oral device known as a palatal expander. If you would like to learn more about how palatal expanders work, please read on, or feel free to contact our Amityville office to request an appointment.

What Are Palatal Expanders?

A palatal expander, sometimes called a palate expander, is a specially designed orthodontic device that helps widen the upper jaw. Its purpose is to support the proper growth of your child’s teeth and other oral structures. By applying gentle and steady pressure to both sides of the upper jaw, the expander gradually encourages the bones to move apart, resulting in a broader dental arch. This process can be effective in preventing future concerns like overcrowded teeth, bite misalignment, and other oral health issues.

Palatal expanders are most effective for children, as their bones are still developing and respond well to treatment. In certain cases, we may use them for teenagers or adults, but this often involves a more complex process.

How Are Palatal Expanders Placed?

The ideal time for your child to begin treatment with a palatal expander is typically between the ages of seven and eight. If your child is within this age range and has not had an orthodontic evaluation yet, now is a great opportunity to take action.

If we determine that a palatal expander is the right choice for your child, we will recommend the most suitable type for their needs. The main options include:

  • Removable expander: This device resembles a retainer and is used for minor adjustments to the palate.
  • Rapid palatal expander: This expander is attached to the back teeth and features a small screw. You will turn the screw with a special key as directed, which gradually widens the jaw over time.

Most children will need to wear a palatal expander for three to six months to achieve the best results, though treatment can take up to a year in some cases.

Caring for a Palatal Expander

Supporting your child’s success with a palatal expander involves some important daily habits. Here are a few tips to help you and your child care for the appliance:

  • Promote thorough oral hygiene. Encourage your child to brush and floss regularly to keep the expander clean. If the device is removable, make sure it is taken out and carefully cleaned as recommended.
  • Monitor eating habits. Hard, chewy, or sticky foods may damage a fixed expander. Foods such as caramels, chewing gum, and hard candies should be avoided.
  • Offer emotional reassurance. Let your child know that some mild soreness is normal. Soft foods can ease the transition as they adjust to the appliance.
  • Attend all follow-up visits. We will track your child’s progress and check to verify that the expander is working as intended.
